We are, first and foremost, neighbors. It is finally there that we bet our life.
In an often too-hurried life, with demands from jobs, families, and friends, or in an unhurried life, with possible lonely absence from such demands, it can be easy to feel unanchored or lost. Many of us find security, and sometimes rock-solid certainty, in our faith. Faith is that on which we bet our life. We have “faith” in the physics of the airplane and in the skill of the pilot. We let go, surrender, knowing we cannot possibly control it all. I think of the old hymn line, “On Christ, the solid Rock I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.” Whatever our rock, we have a constitutional right to our faith.
The curse—or blessing—of our modern era is that beliefs may be tested daily. Exercising our minds and hearts given us from birth is not only our right, it can be a key to the soul. The world’s major religions teach that all beings have infinite worth, that all of us are searching together for life’s meaning. In that respect, we are, first and foremost, neighbors. That knowledge can be our rock.
It’s also a key element of my philosophy and this campaign. Let’s share truths found together, or discuss our truths with respect, be they similar or different.
