Neighborhood Talks are 15-minute discussions with Salinans whose lives reflect commitment to principles of justice and community awareness, on topics in which they have expertise or have studied over time. These four 15-minute segments are put together in two 30-minute programs, each of which contain two 15-minute conversations. They seek to engage neighbors in thinking about their ideas which, if acted upon, can deepen ties to neighbor and place.
Neighborhood Talks #1 features Reverend Dr. William E. Salmon on Faith and Action in Community, and Paula Fried, PhD, on Race and its impact on community interaction. Salmon discusses how our faith guides our action, and how we can use our faith to guide action, to achieve the fair and just life we all need. Fried reviews the barriers, sometimes invisible to the dominant society, which confront minority individuals everyday, and invites us all, regardless of our dominant or minority status, to examine how we might change this dynamic.
Neighborhood Talks #2 features Attorney Scott Price of local firm Marietta, Kellogg, and Price and Salina Psychiatrist and photographer George Jerkovich, M.D. Price discusses workers’ rights as preserved in the Workers’ Compensation system in Kansas. He reviews the positive effects it has for workers and its limitation under present law. Jerkovich discusses the health care system, comparing our system and that of other countries. He links of our system’s deficits to others in the economy, and evaluates the assumptions which led to those deficits.
All segments are moderated by the Access Television’s Board Chairman, David Norlin.
